RULES
The Trail Runner Association are announcing the 14th event of “Mátrabérc Trail” alongside the 9th edition of ”Muzsla Trail”, partially self-sufficiency mountain trail running races on 20 April, 2024. All events take place on the signposted paths in the mid-altitude forests of the Mátra range in Northern Hungary.
Mátrabérc Trail and Muzsla Trail are trail running races that take place along signposted paths/trails in the Mátra Mountains. The longer and more difficult of the two challenges is the Mátrabérc Trail traversing Mount Kékes, the highest peak of Hungary. It is a 54 kilometers-long trail running event boasting a 2800 m D+ overall altitude gain throughout its course. The Muzsla Trail’s corresponding statistics are 27 kilometers in length and 1130 m D+ in terms of overall altitude gain.

Muzsla Trail
20 April, 2024 (Saturday)
Distance: 27 km
Elevation: 1130 m D+
Time limit: 5 hours
Start: Szurdokpüspöki (Hanák Kolos Emlékház) 12:00 a.m.
Finish: Szurdokpüspöki (Hanák Kolos Emlékház) until 05:00 p.m.
Qualifying race for the UTMB awarding 1 ITRA point
Only participants over 18 years are allowed to compete.
All participants are held responsible for assessing their physical abilities so that it is up to the level of the challenge represented in the course statistics (distance, altitude gain etc.) when entering the competition.
Participants may have to deal with a variety of hardships such as physical and mental kind as well as ones due to the severity the weather conditions. Athletes must be aware that they are left to their own devices between refreshment points. That is to say, they have to carry on them all the garments, sufficient amount of food and drink provisions, first aid kits, maps and the like they may need throughout the race.
Participants must be fit and physically capable for competing for such an event, without any known illness or disability which would restrain them from competing.
Participants must acknowledge, know and comply to race rules and ethics.
In order to register in Mátrabérc Trail or Muzsla Trail events, the registration form needs to be filled in properly, the registration fee will be payed in time and the rules are to be accepted.
A) REGISTRATION REQIREMENTS
Registration to the race is only possible via the online registration form available on the official website of the race. The registration ends at the end of the registration period or when have reached the maximum number of participants. The amount of the registration fee depends of the services chosen by each participant. The registration fee should be paid by card when filling out the online registration form. The start list will only comprise names with valid payment.

Muzsla Trail (27 km)
- Base Price until until 29 February 2024: 30 Euro, until 31 March: 35 Euro, until 06 April: 45 Euro

Shuttle Bus Transfer
Participants of Mátrabérc Trail can request bus transfer from the finish area (Szurdokpüspöki, Elementary School) to the start (Sirok, Kőkútpuszta). The bus departs before the official start time (2023 April 22 / 05:45 ). The fee of the bus transfer should be paid with the registration fee. As the number of places on the bus is limited, we will accept the request in order of registration.
Bus transfer fee: 9 Euro
LIMIT: registration is limited to a predefined number of participants (Mátrabérc Trail - 350 runners / Muzsla Trail - 350 runners) therefore participation is guaranteed only if regstration form is submitted AND the payment is transferred in time.
Organizers reserve the right to accept VIP participants to the race after the registration time limits as well.
Payments are required via CARD. Bank transfers are accepted only in exceptional circumstances. In this case please contact us at
The registration fee includes the followings:
- individually produced race number bib
- assistance and refreshment stations along the race route
- real time online results and split timing during the race
- baggage transfer from the start to the finish
- individual refreshment packages transfer to the refreshment points (Mátrabérc Trail only)
- using shower in the finish zone
- hot meal on arrival in the finish zone (optional)
- Mátrabérc T-shirt, sleeveless or jersey (optional)
- finisher medal for finishers within race time-limit (optional)
Attention! Finisher medal is only for those who finish the race within the time limits stated above. Those who do not participate or do not finish the race within the time limits, are not entitled to the finisher medal.
B) CANCELLATION, EXCHANGE
If the competitor wishes to cancel or to transfer his/her registration, organizers must be notified by e-mail about the cancellation info@mbtrail.hu.
Procedure of exchange or reimbursment:
1. Registration transfer to an other person can be requested only within the same race until midnight 7 April 2024 The person owning the registration must send an e-mail to the address above stating that he is transferring the registration to an other person, who's personal data must be included as follows: name, gender, birthdate, e-mail address, telephone number and association. By doing so, the person recieving the registration gets the package ordered by the original owner.
If the new owner wishes to order additional services not included in the original package (bus transfer for example) he/she (the new owner) must order them by sending an e-mai to the address above.
2. Applying for reimbursment of registration fee is possible until Friday midnight, 20 March 2024. In this case 50% of the registration fee minus administration fee is reimbursed.
3. After 7 April 2023 the registration transfer is not possible except Vis Maior circumstances (see paragraph 10)
4. In case of request the cancel of registration, reimbursement of the cost of the shuttle bus transfer is not possible.
Participants get a race bib which must be worn on the FRONT, the chest or the stomach and must be permanently and fully visible throughout the entire race. It must, therefore, always be positioned over any clothing and cannot, for any reason, be altered, folded or covered. Not complying any of these regulations means immediate disqualification without any registration of sport performance.
Participants can get their race packet - including the race bib - in person, personal ID with photo is required.

On both races and the overall results, the first 3 finishers will be awarded, both men and women categories.
The timing for the award ceremony is planned to be:
Mátrabérc Trail (20 April 2024, Saturday), Szurdokpüspöki, (Hanák Kolos Emlékház: 16:00.)
Muzsla Trail (20 April 2024, Saturday), Szurdokpüspöki, (Hanák Kolos Emlékház: 16:00)
Both Mátrabérc Trail and Muzsla Trail race routes follow officially signposted hiking trails. Additionally to the various official signposts, red/white labels with the race's logo are allocated to mark the course.
Mátrabérc Trail check points are located in: Oroszlánvár, Kékestető, Galyatető and Mátrakeresztes.
Muzsla Trail check point is located in Mátrakeresztes.
The organizers may establish unprompted additional check points anywhere along the route.
There are 4 refreshment points placed along Mátrabérc Trail (Oroszlánvár (water only), Kékestető, Galyatető, Mátrakeresztes) and 1 refreshment station along Muzsla Trail (Mátrakeresztes). The last refreshment point will be in the finish zone for both courses.
Refreshment points offer: still water, iso drink, cola, banana, orange, apples, sweet and salty biscuits, chocolate, pickled cucumber, dried plums, raisin, cheese, salt.
The runners must use their own drinking cup and/or water bottle. No drinking cups will be available at the refreshment area!
For the 54 km race personal refreshment by personal crew is only allowed within 50m perimeter of the refreshment points at Kékestető, Galyatető and Mátrakeresztes. These are the checkpoints where personal refreshment material can be transported by the organizers upon request. Runners' personal crew are not transported by organizers.
Personal refreshment packs can be given to organizers at the start in 20 April 2024. (Saturday) Sirok, in Kőkútpuszta between 06:30 - 07:30 hours.

Mátrabérc Trail:
Oroszlánvár: 8:30-10:00
Kékestető 9:30-12:00
Galyatető: 10:30-13:50
Mátrakeresztes: 11:30-15:45
Muzsla Trail:
- Mátrakeresztes: 11:30 - 16:00
ATTENTION: participants who arrive at the checkpoints after cutoff time will be asked to take off their race bibs and can not continue the race.
In case of critical weather conditions, disasters, unexpected extreme situations (such as mandatory pandemic-related regulations) may happen and therefore the race cannot be held, the Organizers keep the right to refuse the reimbursement of the registration fee or any part of it. In this case the race will be postponed to an other date and by default all registrations will remain valid for the new date.
In the case stated above cancelation or registration transfer will be possible until 2 weeks before the new race date!
Backup race date: 5 October 2024
If the postponed race cannot take place at the backup date either, all registrations by default will be valid for the following year's race. In this case cancelation and registration transfers will be possible as stated in paragraph 4.B.
Organizers keep the right to stop or interrupt the race in case of weather problems and / or because of safety reasons, or modify the race time limits.
Organizers keep the right to modify the published program and / or the course of the race.
Obligatory equipment:
- personal drinking cup or wide opening flask used at refreshment stations
- identification card
- mobile phone turned ON
Recommended equipment:
- energy bars or solid food
- wind cheater (anorak) suitable for bad weather in higher areas
- cap, hat or multifunctional scarf
- road-book or/and gps track
Those athletes may be subjects to disqualification who:
- do not wear the race BIB number, hide it, fold it or modify it,
- fail to pass a check point,
- take shortcuts along the race track,
- use any kind of transportation during the race
- take any kind of support from external source
- use personal refreshment outside the dedicated 50m perimeter refreshment zones
- use pacers and/or muling
- reach the checkpoints or the finishline after their closing time
- use prohibited performance-enhancement drugs
- do not help or refuse to aid a participant in an emergency situation
- abandon rubbish or damage the natural or built environment along the race route;
- insult or threate the organiser staff, crew or volunteers
- violate any part of this race rule
There is an emergency medical aid kit at the start and finish site and each refreshment point as well. Organizers and refreshment point personnel are qualified to assist in an emergency situation. In case of accident or severe injury participants can notify the organizers by using the phone number printed on each race bib. Participants will bear in mind that, due to the route characteristics, immediate medical assistance arrival on site may take extra time. Each participant is obliged to take the highest care of her/himself and the safety of others, and to give assistance to fellow participants in case of emergency situations, having injured, if necessary.
By registering, participants acknowledge that Mátrabérc Trail and Muzsla Trail are held on difficult terrain and successful racing requires both physical and mental preparation and experience. By registering partcipants exempt the organizers from any liability, whether civil or criminal, for damage to persons and/or property caused by or to him/her.
Respect and honor yourself and your fellow participants. Do not cheat.
Respect Organizers and the Volunteers: they are devoting their spare time for you.
Respect local inhabitants. They host, accommodate the event and all the participants in their country.
Respect the Environment: do not drop anything away (not even if organizers may not recognize it) along the route and do not shortcut the paths.
Each participant is obliged to give assistance in case of emergency situation.
Protest must be submitted to the Organizers, in writing, together with a deposit of 10000 Hungarian Forints or its equivalent, within 2 hours crossing the finish line. If the protest proves to be unfounded and will be rejected, the deposit will be forfeited to the Organizers. If the protest is upheld, the deposit will be returned.
On registration, athletes accept that photos or videos may be taken by Organizers about them during the race. By registering they accept that Organizers are free to use and to transmit these images or videos.
One can take part in the race only if fulfills the participation requirements, completes the registration form and arranges the entry fee payment before the given deadline.
By registration, the participant acknowledges and accepts without any additional condition the rules and ethics of the race.
